Brown Darling split - how bad is it?

Just how bad are things in Downing Steet these days?

In 'politician speak' phrases like 'the Chancellor has the PM's full backing' usually mean exactly the opposite, that they can't stand each other but bottler Brown can't make his mind up whether to dither or not dither, sack Darling or promote Darling. So when the Treasury takes the unusual step of issuing a statement telling us that there is no rift between Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling you can be pretty sure that the two of them can barely stand being in the same room together.

With plans for a £150 giveaway to families being discussed openly on the train you have to wonder what chance there is for our private and personal information if identity cards ever come to pass. Maybe our data would be safer on the back of a cornflake packet.

While discussing £150 windfalls, it's amazing to note that it's only being discussed for families that are in receipt of child benefit - is this . . . .

  • recognition that SUV drivers on the school run really need help with their fuel bills
  • a slap in the face for the rest of us
  • a cunning plan to make sure Gordon Brown doesn't miss out on a handout
  • Just another way to waste a billion pounds, because that's what it would cost
  • Yet another mad scheme from an incompetent pair (Brown - Darling)
