Is there no respite from the McCann case?

Reports indicate that the case of Madeline McCann's disappearence will at last be closed, and not before time.

The public deserves some respite and an end to those dreadful staring eyes at airports and frontpages.

Sad and heartbreaking as this case may be it is not national news, except maybe on day one. After that it's just something that's selling newspapers and titillating the voyeristic tendencies of the public. To put things in perspective this is one child, there have been 17, yes 17 teenagers murdered in London during the first 6 months of 2008, and who can name one of them except their parents and friends?

This case should never have been dragged on for so long and one wonders why it has when the public ignores so many cases that are equally or more heartrending.
