Cars are a liability and always will be

Thursday, 07 January 2010 12:38

There is much concern that motor manufacturers are going to have a hard time in 2010 as various government scrappage schemes come to an end.

Before we go out lavishing our savings on a new car there's some hard thinking that needs to be done.

A car is not an investment, it's a bottomless pit that will cost money to purchase and will never give anything back. There are people who don't hold that view - the car lovers, people who say they need a car for work etc etc. The truth is that people like cars and are willing to spend lots of money on them. We should not confuse that with 'need' there are in fact few of us that need a car, we just like them.

Remember too that as soon as you drive that new vehicle off the forecourt it's lost about 25% of it's value, and within a couple of years it's worth about 50 to 60% of what you paid. An example is the 11 month old car (Peugeot 206) that was bought from a dealer and just 24 months later that same dealer offered exactly half the purchase price in part-exchange against a new car. The cost of depreciation for that car was exactly 100 pounds a week over the period. Add to that the cost of servicing, tax, insurance etc and that car is an extravagant luxury.

Think very hard before you buy, do you really need a car? If you do, how much do you really need to spend?

Chances are that a reasonably priced used car is what you need, and there are plenty of them about. Don't be in a hurry to part with money, don't limit yourself to a particular model or colour and out there will be a real bargain that will give you cheap motoring for years to come.

Children should be given alcohol if they ask for it

Thursday, 17 December 2009 19:17

In the latest nanny state pronouncement Sir Liam Donaldson, the government's chief nanny, says we shouldn't give children under 15 any alcohol.

What planet does Sir Liam live on?

Children who have never had alcohol don't know how to handle it, they knock it back like fizzy pop and the next thing they know they are staggering about and not knowing what day it is. There is more danger from them staggering under a bus than anything else.

Home is the place to learn about alcohol and moderation. We don't need yet another government edict to tell us how to bring up our children.

Why does Gordon Brown hate the UK?

Friday, 11 December 2009 18:13

What has the population of the UK done to Gordon Brown to make him hate them?

You only have to look at what he's done to come to the conclusion that he hates the Britain and everyone who lives here with a passion and vehemence that he nurtures and cares for on a daily basis.

How else can you explain the social engineering that has all but destroyed marriage, encouraged single parents, made it better to claim benefits than work and to find every more ways to exert your human rights to the detriment of everyone else.

Now in Copenhagen at the so-called 'climate change summit' he is out to give away what little money we have left with no thought or consideration for the fact that the country is bankrupt through his past actions and decisions.

Giving away money to 'poor countries' to offset the effects of climate change is a no brainer. As soon as there is the sniff of money these countries' representatives have their hands out and are shouting that it's not enough. What else do you expect?

Climate change is NOT man-made. It's a natural process and nothing that we do one way or the other is going to change it. Go back just 15 000 years, less than a second on the geological clock, and there were ice sheets kilometres thick over the whole of the UK and you could walk to France and Ireland. The earth has warmed naturally since cavemen were lamenting the fact that if they didn't do something the ice would melt. They tried sacrificing and everything they knew to no avail. The earth warmed, and will continue to warm.

If Gordon wants to do something positive he and all the other climate change lunatics should recognise that overpopulation is the problem.

The man must be mad, or simply hell bent on ruining Britain so that he can hand over a mission impossible to the next government.
