'orrible murder - latest!

Nothing sells papers and news better than an 'orrible murder, so it's no surprise that when someone goes on a killing spree in the wilds of the Lake District that the news media have a field day.

What's more surprising is that the police, always complaining that they don't have enough resources, can suddenly find over 100 officers to investigate these crimes.

There is nothing to investigate, the guy that did the killing is dead, so why do we need 100 police swarming all over Cumbria collecting the smallest fragment of evidence? No-one is going to be charged with anything, no-one is going to jail, so why does it need 100 police - they would be better employed doing whatever they were doing before the incident.

Now, to make matter worse we learn that the Prime Minister and Home Secretary will be visiting the area - well that's going to help a lot, that will mean more police draughted in for security and 'special duties' leaving more swathes of the country without bobbies.

At least the Home Secretary has said that there will be no hasty action, that's some small comfort. If we still had those Labour politicians in charge then there would have already been new laws about guns and breathing. Labour were entirely incapable of assessing risk of any kind, let's hope that this lot have a bit more about them and can resist the temptation to try to legislate risk out of existence.
